Natural edge turning description with images
Turned natural edge items are woodturned pieces of wood where the bark and natural outside shape of the wood is maintained.
This can be in the form of platters, bowls and goblets. It allows the woodturner artistic licence to turn the wood "as it wants to be turned" by taking into account the shape of the piece of wood when it is placed on the lathe. This method of turning is inherently more dangerous than turning regular shaped items as there are spinning sharp edges.

Natural edged Yew platter. This piece was turned whilst still wet and has maintained the knotty bark on the left hand side and tyhe creamy outer wood on the right hand side.
It measures 62cms by 36 cms and when it was being turned it reminded me of a propellor.
When a piece like this is revolving the outer edges are just a blur to the point of being almost invisible.

This Natural edge Yew goblet was turned from a piece where two branches met.
